ABOUT TROY
I am Troy and I work with people navigating neurodiversity including ADHD and autism, people exploring queer identity, people of color and those experiencing racial marginalization, couples, ethical non monogamy, trans and nonbinary people, those with chronic illness and disability, and those navigating life transitions. I largely work with helping people work with their own unique brains whether that means navigating neurodiversity, the effects of trauma, thoughts that come with anxiety or depression, or navigating life's many obstacles.
I believe that therapy is a radical and vulnerable act of self-exploration, growth, and healing. I aim to create a safe space for your authentic self to feel accepted, heard, and validated. We all find ourselves navigating complex and unfair systems daily and we deserve to have someone journey with us through our struggles and our triumphs.
My journey as a Queer, Black man who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes as a teenager and ADHD as an adult has taught me that we are stronger than the challenges that confront us.
I love to help those living with ADHD, Autism and other forms of neurodiversity navigate a chaotic and sometimes unforgiving world. I also have a passion for working with folks living with chronic illness or disabilities build a life rooted in connection and meaning. I specialize in working with adults, adolescents, and children holding queer, BIPOC, neurodivergent, or other marginalized identities.
Helping to build and expand your sense of agency, inner peace, and self-love is at the core of my therapeutic space, in which you are the expert on your own life and experiences. I take an explorative approach that blends cognitive, mindfulness, narrative, somatic and expressive approaches.
As an intern at Healing Umbrella, I offer deep sliding scale rates, so I invite you to reach out through the link below to schedule our free 15-minute consultation. I am here to journey with you!

MY APPROACH TO THERAPY
My approach centers on values, the inherent value of every person, connecting with different parts of ourselves, autonomy, and community. I believe that people need both community and belief in themselves when they are struggling. I understand identity as a journey of discovering and honoring the self and trauma as a disruption of identity. I believe change is created with honesty including honestly acknowledging the conditions that we exist in and have been developed in and including honestly embodying our strengths, joys, and values. Often negative self talk, internal and external conflict, and disconnection derives from something blocking honesty, and with honesty through processing trauma, discovering identity, and recognizing our own strengths, peace and healing can come.

People often seek support from me around living with adhd, healing from trauma, low or damaged self esteem, identity and values exploration, navigating relationship issues, processing marginalization, negative thoughts or self-image associated with anxiety and depression, disconection and isolation, and coping and thriving with chronic illness

I believe that pain needs to be acknowledged, heard, and validated as an essential part of the healing process. People need a safe space where any emotion that arises is allowed to take up space and be expressed. Often, the lack of a safe community can prolong deep seated hurt, and the therapy space is a place for both feeling and exploring hurt on the pathway to healing.

I love to read, bake bread, and periodically start and stop one of the many creative hobbies I have in my rotation (knitting, sewing, collaging, painting, etc.) that I can never seem to fully commit to. I feel most connected when I'm deep in nature on a hike with my husband and our daughter!

My experiences as a type 1 diabetic and adult diagnosed ADHD have strongly affected how I work as a therapist. Feeling the struggle of being in systems that encouraged me to work against the way my brain works instead of with it has taught me the importance of prioritizing rest and committing to my own values instead of society's. Life is full of unexpected challenges and changes, health scares, discrimination, and misunderstandings and through it all you are still there. A strong sense and knowledge of self helps us weather storms and create a life which is good for us, regardless of life's challenges.

I wish it was more common knowledge that our human brains are adapted for healing. Like a cut in our skin heals into a scar, damage to our psyche can heal with rest, tenderness, and careful attention. Often people feel lost and confused in times of pain and feel shame around not healing "right" or "fast enough" but the process works differently for all of us, and therapy is a great space to learn how your unique brain with it's unique experiences heals.

I hope that people carry a strong understanding of their values and a sense of agency after working with me. As a strength-based therapist, I hope to help the process of self exploration for people to discover and rediscover inner peace, inner strength, and self-love.

Outside of therapy I love Latin dances like salsa and bachata, board games and video games, nerdy movies, and crocheting.
