ABOUT STAN
Hey y'all, I'm Stan (he/they)! I became a therapist to be the resource I never had growing up as a queer neurodivergent kid in rural south Louisiana and give my LGBTQ+ community access to a therapist that understands shares their experiences. Living inauthentically for much of my life in the closet, I struggled with my identity and mental health before therapy helped me discover, explore, define, and become my authentic self. You are a unique, complex, and vibrant being, not a diagnosis. If you are looking for someone to listen, understand, empathize, empower, and help you liberate yourself by taking your mental health into your own hands, then I would love to be that person!
Coming out can feel like meeting yourself for the first time, and that journey to know yourself more authentically can be messy and confusing. There’s no manual that can tell you even where to begin.
I grew up in the rural South as a pansexual kid, isolated from anyone who shared my experience. I came out publicly when I was 28 and have spent years discovering and exploring my identities.
Yet coming out was so liberating and empowering! If you are looking for someone to listen, understand, empathize, empower, and help you through that process, then I would love to be that person.
And as a queer person who’s lived with ADHD my entire life, I understand how society doesn’t consider neurodivergent humans when it designs its structures and systems. It doesn’t try to know and understand people who are different.
That’s why I approach therapy through a combination of person-centered, existential, liberation, and psychodynamic lenses. You are a unique, complex, and vibrant being, not a diagnosis. I am passionate about working with LGBTQ+ teens, those coming out later in life, gay and bi men, neurodivergence, and working with the ethically nonmonogamous, polyamorous, and kink/BDSM communities through a sex-positive lens.
I believe that you have the radical power to enact change within yourself and the world around you, and I would love the chance to know and understand you and your unique experience! Please reach out through the link below to schedule your free consultation. As an intern at Healing Umbrella, I offer deep sliding scale rates.

MY APPROACH TO THERAPY
I believe the nature of existence is change. It is impossible for anything to not change, whether it be a rock floating in space, or a person stuck in a cycle. As people, we uniquely have the ability to self-direct our changes. I believe we are most satisfied/emotionally flexible/resilient when we are able to live as our authentic selves. The authentic self is the ideal person we want to be, represented by our values. When we choose or are forced to live inauthentically, it creates internal distress, anxiety, depression, conflict, and confusion. It's never too late to choose to be the person you want to be. I believe that you have the radical power to enact change within yourself and the world around you. We can choose to create our own meaning, and in doing so, liberate ourselves from the expectations and judgements of others. The best thing about finding out you are in a cage of your own making, is that you can let yourself out.
My work is heavily influenced by Existential, Liberation, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Psychodynamic, and Person-Centered Psychology. I value autonomy, the unique experiences of my clients, understanding, empowerment, curiosity, and the stories that shape who we are and how we interact with ourselves and the world around us. I believe each person's experience is unique and should be understood with curiosity instead of judgement and assumptions. No one is their diagnosis. I collaborate with my clients to find solutions and approaches that work best for them. My goal as a therapist is to help my clients empower themselves to achieve change on their own, so they no longer need me.

Identity exploration, anxiety, trauma, people-pleasing, existential dread/questioning, interpersonal relationships/communication, life transitions.

Safety to be vulnerable without judgement. The ability to engage with their pain with curiosity and understanding rather than hostility and judgement. We cannot avoid experiencing painful emotions, but we can change our relationship to them from resistant and avoidant to accepting and collaborative.

I grew up in rural south Louisiana in a heavily Catholic community. I didn't know anyone that shared my experience as a queer kid and learned that being queer was “bad” from the culture around me. Even after I accepted that I was queer, I felt like I hadn't “suffered enough” to claim my queer identity. My friends helped me challenge those cognitions and decide to come out publicly. Now, my queer identity is such a big part of who I am, even though I may not fit a lot of the stereotypes. I know everyone's experiences in life are different and that doesn't take away from our identity, it adds to it.

There are no "bad" emotions. Our emotions all have a purpose and are trying to help us in someway, even if they aren't very successful at it. By engaging with our emotions instead of avoiding, ignoring, or trying to get rid of them, we can begin to understand them, what they are trying to do, how they have helped in the past, how they are part of who we are, and how we can work with them to find more helpful and healthy solutions. To reject your emotions is to reject yourself, but that doesn't mean they have to control you. By working with them, you take back control of your mind, liberating yourself from your maladaptive coping strategies.

I engage in a lot of "deep work". This includes deep-diving into the origins, motivations, patterns, and meanings involved in our psychopathology. When my clients better understand the cognitions and traumas that cause their symptoms, it helps them take their power back from them. When my clients truly realize that they can create their own meanings and decide their own values, it liberates them from the expectations and judgement of others, allowing them to live their lives in accordance to their own values as they define them. Liberating them from binary-thinking, opening them up to the spectrum of possibilities and truths that is the reality of the human existence. Like breaking down a wall and finding a whole world on the other side of it you never thought possible but has been there all along.

I hope the client learns to engage with their thoughts, emotions, cognitions, and behaviors with curiosity instead of judgement, compassion instead of shame, collaboration instead of resistance, confident values instead of uncertainty and confusion, and can utilize all of those skills to enact the change they need in their lives, becoming their own "inner therapist".
